    Self-efficacy beliefs in pre-service chilean english teachers

    Tesis (Profesor de Inglés para la Enseñanza Básica y Media y al grado académico de Licenciado en Educación)This research study investigated Chilean pre-service teachers of English. A mixed-method research design was employed to obtain relevant data in this study. The quantitative instrument selected was an adapted version of the questionnaire developed by Tschannen-Moran & Hoy called “Teachers’ Sense of Self-Efficacy Scale” (1998). This version of the questionnaire was applied to 39 participants who were the total number of students going through their last semester at the English Teaching Training Programme at Universidad Nacional Andrés Bello. The qualitative instrument employed was an interview developed by the researchers. After having conducted the questionnaire, 10 participants were randomly chosen to implement a one-on-one interview, in order to explore more in depth in the questionnaire results. Therefore, the results were divided into two sections: quantitative and qualitative. An analysis of the questionnaire was made in the quantitative results section likewise, for the interview in the qualitative results section. Finally, in the conclusion, a thorough analysis was provided so that self-efficacy beliefs of pre-service teachers were described. The findings in this research exhibited that in general the levels of self-efficacy of pre-service teachers are high.Este estudio investigó las nociones de autoeficacia de los profesores chilenos en formación. El método mixto fue empleado para obtener información relevante en este estudio. El instrumento cuantitativo seleccionado fue una versión adaptada de la cuestionario desarrollado por Tschannen-Moran & Hoy llamada “Teachers’ Sense of Self-efficacy Scale” (1998). Esta versión del cuestionario fue aplicada a 39 participantes quienes constituyen la totalidad de alumnos cursando el último semestre del Programa de Formación de Profesores de Inglés de la Universidad Nacional Andrés Bello. El instrumento cualitativo seleccionado fue una entrevista creada por los investigadores. Después de haber realizado la encuesta, 10 participantes fueron aleatoriamente seleccionados para llevar a cabo entrevistas personales con la finalidad de explorar más a fondo los resultados de la encuesta. Por consiguiente, los resultados están divididos en dos secciones: cuantitativos y cualitativos. Un análisis de la encuesta fue realizado en la sección de resultados cuantitativos y de igual manera, de la entrevista en la sección de resultados cualitativos. Finalmente, en la conclusión un exhaustivo análisis fue proporcionado de modo que las percepciones de autoeficacia de los profesores en formación fueron retratadas.     I had not met Michael Ritterson before he visited the Conservation Lab at Special Collections, where he was having a book mended, but I had certainly heard of him. A former faculty member of the German department, Mr. Ritterson is now a German translator, taking on projects from translating the work of a 17th German woman’s study of butterflies to the poetry of a Berlin leftist written during the 1968 Movement. And, by previous contact in the mail, he had heard of me. So after Mary Wooton showed him the fully repaired book, we were formally introduced and had the opportunity to discuss his translating projects. It was more than an opportunity to chat with an interesting visitor; it was an opportunity to share talents and abilities. [excerpt

    Building on a terminology resource – the Irish experience

    www.focal.ie is the national database of Irish language terminology. In this paper, we examine: (i) the impact achieved by this resource in the five year period since work commenced; (ii) the possibilities which have arisen from one project over a short time span, to develop sub-projects and related initiatives; and (iii) the advantages and opportunities arising from the creation of one high-quality electronic language resource. The Irish case shows that the development of high-quality resources for a lesser-used language can have interesting and unexpected knock-on effects. We present eight stages and aspects of term planning: preparation/planning; research; standardisation; dissemination; implantation; evaluation; modernisation/maintenance; and training. Fiontar, in its work,has moved from its initial involvement in the dissemination of terminology, to take an active part in other aspects of term planning for Irish: research, standardisation, evaluation, modernisation and training. This has been achieved through editorial and technological development, in partnership with key stakeholders and always from a socioterminological point of view – that is, with an emphasis on terminology as an aspect of language planning and from the point of view of users in particular. Particular projects described include Focal as a term management system and as a user resource; tools for translators; user links to a corpus; the development of a new sports dictionary; and research into subject field headings. Two related projects are the LEX legal terms project for term extraction and standardisation, and the development of terminology for the European Union

    This dissertation thesis has been written as a result of the project “Language Toolkit”, promoted by the Department of Interpretation and Translation of Forlì in collaboration with the Romagna Chamber of Commerce. The aim of the project is to act as a bridge between local companies and Specialized Translation students, fostering business internationalisation and creating new potential job opportunities. This dissertation describes the 300-hour internship carried out by the author at the Forlì-based company Olitalia S.r.l., which processes and markets a plethora of vegetable oils. The task assigned to the trainee is the translation into British English of the HACCP Plan of Olitalia. This thesis consists of five chapters aimed at describing and analysing in-depth the work carried out during the internship at Olitalia. The first chapter focuses on the description of the company, the food safety discipline and HACCP method. The second chapter outlines the level of internationalisation and digitalisation of small and medium-sized enterprises located in Emilia-Romagna and the role of translation in multilingual business communication. The third chapter provides a theoretical background of the main technologies for translation which can be used as a support for the internationalisation process. The fourth chapter shows the preparatory work performed before starting the translation, with a particular focus on Nord’s text analysis and all the resources created and used to translate the HACCP Plan. Finally, the fifth chapter describes al the macro-strategies and micro-strategies employed to carry out the translation

    Transforming informal communities through discourse intervention:RioOnWatch, favelas and the 2016 Olympic Games

    In August 2016, tens of thousands of journalists descended on Rio de Janeiro to cover the summer Olympic Games held in that city. While the majority covered the action on the track, many sought stories about the city itself, world famous for startling inequality at close quarters. Catalytic Communities, and a non-governmental organisation which has worked with favela residents for years aimed to capitalise on this attention through their RioOnWatch project, an online news site providing detailed coverage of events in favelas across the city, in both English and Portuguese. The NGO also worked with numerous journalists who visited Rio de Janeiro to help them understand and accurately report on the complexities of the Olympic city. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Rio, this chapter traces RioOnWatch’s attempts to transform the discourse around favelas during this moment in the global spotlight, seizing this political opportunity. In essence, RioOnWatch is involved, with other social movement actors, in a discursive contest over the power to define favelas. This is aimed at undermining the logic of harmful policies including pacification and forced evictions
